On Thursday, September 5, San Miguel lost a legend. For nearly 30 years, Lou Christine walked around town donning his signature fedora and shades. Most of the time he was also carrying his trusty portfolio – a worn-around-the-edges folder made from the same material as an official NFL football – equipped with some VIP Club cards and stickers, contracts, and anything else he might need to conduct business. When we took over running the Club for him back in February, we asked Lou for the list of his business contacts – phone numbers or emails of the various owners or managers of the 120 restaurants and 90 or so other businesses affiliated with the Club. He just laughed. “I don’t have anything like that!” was his reply. Lou did business his own way… by walking the streets of San Miguel and talking to people in person. It has been a daunting task to try and fill those shoes, and we thought we would have more time with Lou feeling good and accompanying us around town, introducing us to the hundreds of people who always enjoyed seeing him. That was not to be, as what was asymptomatic stage 4 lung cancer took a sudden turn for the worse in March. He was still getting out from time to time, but he tired easily and wasn’t quite feeling himself. We still heard from him pretty much every day though. He would call us regularly, passing off his VIP Club wisdom as things occurred to him. Reminding us to do certain things. Telling us about deals he had made that we needed to follow up with. Showering us with praise for something we did right, or criticism for something he didn’t agree with. We knew the day would come that Lou would leave this earth, and we are happy that he’s now at peace and not in pain anymore. But the reality of not hearing from him almost every day has left a void in our lives, and we miss our friend deeply. Lou has entrusted us with “his baby” and we promise to continue his legacy as best we can, supporting both local businesses and residents alike in this beautiful place we are all privileged to call home.

Now rembering Lou’s voice, “Let’s get rockin’!”
