Sorry to say, there’s a lot of misery in the world today, just read the news, yet it’s only LOVE that can humanize and save us all. One of our esteemed members regaled this week about losing his son. Such stories can tear you up, yet with love there’s always a silver lining. Please let me share a small love story to wrap up this flash.
There are touching stories about father-son relationships. One that got to me, was that a father and son, both baseball fans, saved all winter long to go to the opening day at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia back in the ’50s. The son was about 12. His dad said, “take your glove, maybe we’ll get a foul ball.” The writer said they could still smell the new paint on the red painted seats when they entered the ballpark. Don’t you know a screaming foul ball came their way, and just over their heads a few rows behind them. The kid wrote that dad jumped to it and there was a scramble and all you could see were a bunch asses and elbows bent-over and vying for a souvenir. Dad returned, with out-of-luck look, hands extended as his expression said, sorry, son. That very night when the kid put his head down on the pillow he felt a hard lump. He placed his hand inside the pillow to see what it was? Don’t you know, Dad had a surprise for him! And don’t you know pops got that wayward ball. The kid wrote as an adult he still possessed that baseball, and still visible, is that red smudge from when the ball bounced off that recently painted seat from a long time ago.
